Synopsis

Silent travelogue. Photography by Rev. H. R. Ferger. Intertitle: 'India – That great country of intangible thrill, of the east that is east, f oriental beauty and colour.' Scenes at the Taj Mahal. Various shots of elephants and riders, including a parade of richly adorned elephants. Street scenes; camels. Intertitle: 'India – That bewildering country of many languages, races, and religions that at times seems beyond the understanding of us of the West.' Street sideshow – man climbs poles with numerous vessels balanced on head; 'Charming the Deadly Cobra'; various shots of snake charming. Men holding large python. Boy tying turban. Intertitle: 'India – That land of care free existence, of bazaars crowded with surging pulsing throngs, of direst poverty jostling elbows with fabulous wealth' Street scenes; 'Sacred bulls wander unmolested through the bazaars'. Market scenes. Children. Vegetable traders. Studies of various people in the bazaar. Street side-show with child acrobats and performing monkeys. 'India – That mysterious land of peoples with strange customs and curious vehicles.' Water buffaloes drawing heavy carts. Rickshaws and ox-carts. Some cars (Morris?). Camel carts. Intertitle: 'The Dhobi or Washerman, according to Mark Twain, tries to break a rock with a shirt.' Dhobis had at work at the ghats. Carpenters sawing wood with two man saws. 'India – Where men have spent their lives in age-long quest of the eternal'; 'At Benares, the oldest sacred city in the world'; 'By Bathing in the sacred ganges, the pilgrims believe that their sins are washed away.' Varanasi: bathers at the ghats. 'One sees many sadhus or fakirs, some doubtless sincere in their quest'; numerous sadhus at the ghats, many covered in ash or paint. 'Muhammedans are faithful in their performance of their Friday prayers': scenes of Moslems praying. 'Fanatical devotees beat their breasts on the festival of Moharrum': scenes of processions and flagellation. Beach scene; end.
