Synopsis
INTEREST. Opening shot of the cargo ship, the "Ionian" lying in bay at Gibraltar. The cargo is unloaded and the ship prepares to sail. The furnace is stacked up and the engineer tests the oil-level. The ship sails on from Gibraltar to Malta. Awnings are set up as protection from the sun. The radio-operator signals Malta and the ship sails into harbour. The commentary then summarizes the functions of the British Merchant Navy. Before the next stop, new strong runners are fitted for unloading heavy cargo. At Haifa, corrugated iron is unloaded from the "Ionian" before she travels on to Famagusta and other places in Cyprus. The next port of call is Alexandria where explosives, aeroplane parts, chains and cement are unloaded. Egyptian cotton is loaded on the "Ionian", then sails for London, passing the Rock of Gibraltar on its way (842 ft).
