Synopsis

Amateur film. The Daruel Tobacco Plantations Limited estate at Segama, Lahad Datu, in Sabah, the Malaysian part of Borneo.

Coolies carrying loads to a boat at the edge of a river and carrying bales from the boat into the shed at Lahad Datu. "Travel by road, river and sea". Estate earth roads. Small rowing and sailing boats. "The main road to Lahad Datu. 8 miles long". (Colour) Shot from a car. A bus bearing the sign Meng Loong; Native huts. "A drying shed. There is roughly one to every five fields". The shed being constructed with a timber frame; men laying the roof (black and white). The finished shed (colour). "Tobacco hanging in drying sheds". "Many small smouldering log fires are used to control humidity". "A European Field House": under construction (b/w) and finished (colour). "Coolies preparing to go into field quarters": a crowd of coolies with baskets being marshalled; truck; the field camp. "Preparatory work. Jungle clearing, felling and burning": felled trees; men hacking undergrowth and trees; burning trees (colour and b/w). "Secondary jungle": less dense. "Jungle cleared of undergrowth on the new site": coolies driving water-buffalo who do the haulage. "Some native and Chinese types". Man paddling and netfishing from a dugout. "Saluks": rowing boat. "Chinese": including children. "The Estate has a Chinese theatre": costumed actors parading outside work sheds; men, women and children. "The Dragon at the Chinese New Year": two-man dragon with procession. "Some of the staff": Europeans.. "The new storage go-down on the wharf, Lahad Datu": water-side buildings.
