Synopsis

The Jones Collection is made up of films taken by the renowned epidemiologist and expert on tropical disease, Cenydd Richard Jones. Jones, who was awarded the MBE, OBE and CBE for his work in the field of medicine, worked for the Colonial Medical Service between 1949 and 1967, before working as an epidemiologist for the World Health Organisation in Africa until 1981. The films in the collection contain footage shot in Aden, Kenya, and numerous reels of British Guiana. The latter footage is of particular importance as it is amongst the only known film from this period to document the Amerindian Wai Wai people of the Guianese interior, to whom Jones was assigned as Medical Officer.

Production / Donor Details: Films from the collection of Cenydd Richard Jones, a specialist in tropical diseases who served in the Colonial Medical Service 1949-1967. Jones served in British Guiana, Aden Protectorate, and in the Federation of South Arabia. He later worked for the World Health Organisation.
