I. Onboard USS Missouri the Japanese representatives wait after signing the instrument of surrender - General MacArthur seats himself prior to signing. Cut to sequence showing Admiral Fraser signing for Great Britain. Pan over crowded spectators and film crews. The Japanese delegation leaves, led by the limping Mr Shigemitsu. Massed fly past of American carrier borne aircraft. Cut to LS of the capsized Japanese training ship Kasuga. Cut back to Missouri just prior to the arrival of the Japanese - the Allied representatives are organised into lines by the Americans - Fraser chats with the Chinese representative, General Hsu Yung-chang. MacArthur and Nimitz come on deck, followed by Halsey. The Japanese finally arrive led by Mr Shigemitsu, whose bad leg gives him some difficulty in the ascent to the gun deck.

II. Ex-prisoners enact their morning routine in a Japanese POW camp. Man gets up from beneath blanket - the room is lined with straw matting, and he has been sleeping on the floor - he folds the blanket neatly. Bowls of rice, soup and water are pushed through the slightly opened door, and the prisoner begins to eat, using his chop sticks with practised ease. Watched by a guard, the man sweeps corridor with a twig broom and then washes the floor. Cut to exterior scene - four prisoners leave the hut and fall in for morning inspection - they stand with their arms in the air and their knees partially bent - the inspecting guard carries a large wooden club. Japanese guard acts out in slow motion the beating of a prisoner - he strikes the man on the buttocks with his club as the prisoner stands hands above head, legs straight but leaning forward from the waist. CU as prisoners fall in each holding a can - a Japanese seaman inspects the contents of the cans and empties them into a pail he is carrying - fly killing detail?

III. Continuation of I. Japanese stand as MacArthur reads a short speech. Mr Shigemitsu, assisted by his aide Mr Kase, then signs the instrument of surrender, followed by General Umetsu. MacArthur signs and gives a pen to one of his aides. General Hsu Yung-chang signs for China. Admiral Fraser signs, and in imitation of MacArthur gives pens to Brind and Rawlings. Final shots of spectators and correspondents busy covering the event - reloading cameras, talking into microphones, shooting cine film, etc.
