Synopsis
I. Reel One. Evacuation of British and Commonwealth prisoners of war from Hainan. Onboard a British cruiser, Captain RN talks with a small group of US officers - a Japanese officer is in attendance, looking unhappy. The party go ashore. Cut to sequence showing Commonwealth POWs sitting on the veranda of their hut - some are Australians. Another hut houses Indian troops - one wearing a loin-cloth leads a dog on a lead - the men are generally well turned out, and appear pleased. CU of a Sikh, who twirls his moustache nervously and mops his brow. Hospital block (?) - a group of prisoners wave cheerfully - some are wearing white wraps in the Japanese style. Dark interior sequence - various shots of men lying on bunk beds - they regard the camera impassively. CU of man lying on his bed smoking - his ribs and the bones of his legs stand out sharply in the slanting light from the window. Cut to wooden jetty where the ex-POWs go onboard a Japanese daihatsu landing craft - out in the offing lie two British destroyers and a Japanese submarine chaser.
II. Reel Two. Re-interment of Dutch serviceman in a military cemetery? Officer salutes coffin - he wears the collar patches of the Dutch East Indies Army sewn to the lapels of his khaki drill. A salute is fired by three US soldiers carrying M1 carbines. The service is read. Netherlands national flag is removed from the draped coffin and Japanese burial detail lowers it into the grave.
III. Commonwealth POWs alight from a Japanese naval coach on quayside. A US colonel addresses them and is received with cheers. The men board a Japanese landing craft alongside - some of them appear very weak, requiring help to go onboard - a hospital ship is visible lying offshore. A lorry brings up stretcher cases who are put into the landing craft - one waves to the camera. Final shot is from the landing craft as it makes off.
IV. Reel Three. Hong Kong, 19 September, 1945. Admiral Fraser makes a tour of the New Territories. On arrival at Kowloon on the mainland he inspects the guard of honour. Pipe band of No 42 Commando marches past. Fraser and party inspect a railway station near the border.
