EVACUATION OF COMMONWEALTH POWS FROM HAINAN ON HMHS GERUSALEMME

Synopsis

Stretcher cases are taken up gangway onto hospital ship HMS Gerusalemme. Two men go up unaided - one shakes the hand of a naval lieutenant who has accompanied him to the foot of the gangway. Cut to interior of bare POW hut - a Japanese stands looking out of one of the paper windows. On the outside of one of the huts is painted a large map of the Pacific theatre - a Japanese officer points out various features on the map. Interior shot showing blankets and a few abandoned boxes scattered about the otherwise bare hut. CUs of POWs footwear - ragged felt slippers and open clogs. HA.LS pan over curving terraces of graves on a steep hillside - a stiff breeze is blowing. LS to POW encampment below. Cut back to quayside, and HA from hospital ship as POWs come up gangway, sailors carrying their kit, while other crewmen unload stores. Cameraman moves down onto the quayside for LA pan across afterbody of Gerusalemme. Two flag officers go onboard the hospital ship. Small steam engine arrives on the quayside. Flag officer talks with a group of men standing beside the train. Cut back to interior of POW hut, and MS of the yard outside where there are water troughs beneath a lean-to. Final CU of the unpleasant looking water in troughs.
