SCENES IN HONG KONG AFTER THE RE-OCCUPATION

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: ADM 1207).

Synopsis

I. Reel One. Japanese war criminals are rounded up under heavy and ostentatious guard, frisked, and then driven off to gaol - one of the men under arrest is Colonel Esao Tokunaga, whose trouser band has been cut 'to stop him running away'.

II. Sequence shot from high ground above Victoria - down to scattered shipping in the bay and mainland beyond, and up to Japanese war memorial on the heights (shortly to be demolished).

III. Lieutenant P Morris and Sub-Lieutenant R Spurway of HMS Indomitable, entrusted with the reorganisation of the railway, ride onboard the first train to leave Kowloon station.

IV. Ships in Hong Kong Bay. MLS of LSI(L) Glengyle. MLS of submarine depot ship HMS Montclare. MS of fleet tanker, and pan right over sunken vessel to Montclare - the sequence is shot from a very unsteady boat. MSs of cargo/passenger ship possibly the Llanstephan Castle. Various shots of Montclare, sunken tanker, merchantman and Beachy Head Class fleet maintenance ship.

V. Reel Two. Movement of Japanese troops to repatriation points. LS over earthen parade square crowded with heavily burdened Japanese troops - laden rickshaws stand about - it is evidently hot as some of the Japanese mop themselves with cloths. CUs as some of the troops start off from the compound - all are very heavily laden, and two of the men carry their baggage lashed to a pole carried between them. CU of a seated Japanese waiting to start off - he ignores the camera. Two women with children move among the busy troops. CUs of Japanese seated beside their handcart - one man shields his face with his hand, others look away from the camera. MS to bend in a road as a steady stream of Japanese troops pass by - in the foreground more troops with two laden rickshaws join the main column. Various shots of the troops on the march - some of their packs are absurdly big, one man carrying a whole trunk tied to his back.
