ADMIRAL SERVAES VISITS ASH CAMP IN SHANGHAI

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: ADM 1209).

Synopsis

I. Rear-Admiral Servaes pays a visit to Ash Camp, the wartime internment area for British and Allied subjects in Shanghai. The Admiral, accompanied by a Lieutenant-Commander RNVR and a marine officer, shakes hands and chats with the internees, before delivering a short address from the veranda of main building - the small crowd applauds him. Above the building flies the flag of the Chinese Republic and, a little higher up, a Union Jack. After his address the Admiral talks with various internees.

II. Party onboard HMS Belfast for children of the internees. A seaman helps a child on a swing rigged on the upper deck. A larger swing, improvised from a crate, is suspended from the ship's crane, and a bosun's chair has been rigged to run down from the bridge onto the boat deck.
