MOUNTBATTEN ACCEPTS THE SURRENDER OF JAPANESE FORCES IN SOUTH EAST ASIA

Synopsis

I. CU of Mountbatten on the terrace outside the Municipal Buildings, Singapore, reading the Order of the Day - in the background is Allied Air C-in-C SE Asia, Air Marshal Sir Keith Park. LS of the saluting base as Union Jack is broken out. Cut to dark interior shot - Japanese delegation files in. Mountbatten joins the Allied representatives, amongst whom are visible Power, Wheeler, Slim and Park. Higaki and Mountbatten sign the surrender instrument. Japanese delegation leaves. Mountbatten leans over to speak a few words to Admiral Power. Cut to exterior as Japanese leave after the signing. Mountbatten reads the Order of the Day, and camera pans over the four guards of honour drawn up before the building. The Allied representatives descend steps and salute as the Union Jack is broken out. Mountbatten leads the cheering before departing in a staff car.

II. CUs of passing Japanese army lorries crowded with men and columns of Japanese troops laden with baggage - many have their bicycles and other loot.

III. Singapore Naval Base. CU of a RN sentry on guard at quayside where HMS Rotherham is alongside - a Japanese steamer Kitakami Maru is also present. Cut to a sequence of LA views of the Japanese cruiser Takao - British officers go onboard over the damaged stern. CUs of sunken vessels in the harbour. Camera boat passes close by I.501 and I.502 ex-German IX Class submarines, and the destroyer Kamikaze. MS of Rotherham lying alongside.

IV. Sequence in a warehouse where Japanese soldiers' baggage is checked before they are evacuated to the Malayan mainland. Kitbags are upended, and impounded articles thrown onto the floor. CU of a pile of confiscated goods shows pairs of plimsolls, binoculars, a torch, etc - a British inspector works the slide of a 'Kiska Model' Taisho 14 automatic.
