HMS EAGLE ENTERS GRAND HARBOUR

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: ADM 1410).

Synopsis

During the spring cruise of the Home Fleet, HMS Eagle enters Grand Harbour, Malta.

Aerial LS down the length of Grand Harbour, Malta - Eagle lies near Bighi Bay, while in the inner harbour are several cruisers and HMS Indomitable in dry dock. Cut to aerial sequence showing HMS Eagle approaching the outer breakwater and passing below Fort St Elmo as she enters the outer harbour. The camera-aircraft circles as tugs guide the carrier in and turn her to face the harbour entrance - in one shot HMS Virago (F.76) is visible in the entrance to Dockyard Creek. The camera-aircraft closes, the helicopter's shadow passing across the carrier's deck - the crew are manning the ship for entry into port and Fireflies, Sea Hornets and Attackers are arrayed on deck.

Notes

Summary: the carrier in dry dock is almost certainly HMS Indomitable. On 3 February she had suffered an internal explosion which damaged a section of the starboard side below the island, killing eight of the crew and injuring thirty two. She sailed to Malta for repairs
