Synopsis
Visit of the NATO Council to Malta.
NATO Council on board HMS Surprise reviews ships taking part in Exercise Medflex Baker. Flypast and sailpast of SHAFE forces watched by, among others, Admiral Mountbatten (C-in-C Med) and Lord Ismay (NATO Secretary General). Ships of different nationalities pass in salute; Italian motor torpedo boats pass Surprise at speed. Vice-Admiral Reid is transferred to HMS Bermuda from HMS Surprise. Flypast of helicopters from RNAS Hal Far. Commodore W J W Woods (Chief of Staff Mediterranean) is hoisted into a helicopter from the forecastle of Surprise. Ships in line behind HMS Chevron, nearest ship being HMS Saintes. RAF "Shackletons" flying down the lines of ships. HMS Surprise passes ships of the Turkish Navy; HMS Saintes turns out of line.
