HMS TIGER SALUTES EISENHOWER

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: ADM 1715).

Synopsis

C-in-C Mediterranean, Admiral Sir Alexander Bingley, leaves Malta in HMS Tiger to render a salute to the US task group carrying President Eisenhower.

Aerial sequence showing HMS Tiger at sea and the US task group steaming in line ahead for the exchange of salutes. Tiger passes to the left of the oncoming US line. The camera-aircraft flies along to the right of the line - USS Stormes is in the van, followed by USS Myles C Fox, the guided missile heavy cruiser SS Boston, USS Essex, USS Des Moines, and two more destroyers, USS Vogelgesang and USS Mullinix. A second camera is onboard HMS Tiger, and shows Admiral Bingley coming onboard in Malta, to be received by the Captain and introduced to the ship's officers. Tiger heads out to sea, and works up to full speed. For the encounter with the US ships the RM guard is fallen in on the quarterdeck and the ship is manned on the starboard side. The Admiral, wearing full dress, salutes the Americans. The compliment is returned. As Tiger passes USS Boston, the camera-aircraft, a Wessex helicopter, can be seen in the background. Once Tiger has passed down the line, the US ships can be seen to break into a more open formation. The crew disperse, and Tiger resumes her full speed.
