Synopsis

Street scenes - British naval ratings and warrant officers with a few soldiers shop in a street market. Sequence showing a Chinese sign painter at work - when he notices the camera he starts to get down hastily from his ladder, but is persuaded to stay - the finished sign reads CHINA AUTO ACCESSORY CO in English and Chinese characters. LA along the front of a block of flats covered in street signs and advertising placards. MSs of a sign advertising a gold and money changer and front of a barber's shop with the traditional striped pole. MSs of the warehouse of China Emporium Ltd, and a cinema showing 'Sun Valley Serenade' with Sonja Henie and John Wayne. Shots of crowded trams in a main street, and study of a quayside terminus. MS of front of Chang Brothers and Co. RN personnel stand in front of a cinema showing 'Northwest Passage' starring Spencer Tracy. Shots of locals strolling on the sidewalks. Interior sequence in a bank - a Lieutenant RN changes a large denomination note
