TRINCOMALEE NAVAL BASE

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: ADM 1778).

Synopsis

Shipping in anchorage at Trincomalee taken from a motor launch and an aeroplane.

Opening sequence shot from launch in main anchorage - HMS London is present, fitted with a prominent Type 277 radar before the mainmast. Three Ruler Class escort carriers are moored in a row - the leading ship bears the pendant number 91 (HMS Stalker ?). Astern of the escort carriers is the destroyer depot ship HMS Woolwich. Cut to aerial views of the anchorage and neighbouring coastline - carrier row appears and shots of depot ship HMS Wolfe with submarines alongside - near Wolfe is a Mull Class (?) maintenance ship. Revert to view from launch - LCT 1156 passes - LA fine on starboard bow of escort aircraft carrier 91 and CU as the launch passes down her starboard side - she carries Type 277 and Type 279 air search radars - a man semaphores from the island. Launch passes on down starboard side of the second carrier in the line, HMS Shah (21) - her fit includes Type 277 but with the large mattress of a US SK air search radar surmounted by a IFF panel mounted on the mainmast. Return to aerial sequence, and views of LCT(4), powered aircraft transport lighter, fleet auxiliary with two Dido Class cruisers, flotilla of Fairmile B motor launches, Wolfe with five submarines alongside , LCM and small craft, a Catalina flying boat. Aircraft then circles over Bambara field where Avengers and Liberators are parked, and comes in to land. More aerial shots of hospital ship and depot ship HMS Woolwich with two destroyers alongside, one Tribal and one U/V Class - ahead of the hospital ship is an anonymous supply vessel with MFV alongside, and ahead of Woolwich are the three carriers, HMS Emperor (98), HMS Shah with Avengers on deck, and escort aircraft carrier 91 - various auxiliaries and supply ships appear in the background, including a boom defence vessel and the repair ship HMS Ausonia. Aircraft climbs to give wider views of the anchorage, centring on Woolwich and the three carriers - a second Tribal and the LSI(M) Princess Beatrix appear at end of sequence. Cut back to shots from launch - LS of the camouflaged Ausonia and pass down port side of Shah, then MLS to stern of escort aircraft carrier 21 before camera-craft moves back down the line, past HMS Emperor towards HMS Woolwich. Final aerial LS over the anchorage, aircraft then moving away to pick up the coastline.
