This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: ADM 2538).

Synopsis

Scenes filmed on 16mm Kodachrome in Hong Kong harbour after the Japanese surrender on 12 September 1945.

START 00:21:09 Shots from the cameraman's vessel as it passes the port side of HMS Colossus, a 13,000-ton Royal Navy aircraft carrier, between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. A large canvas awning has been erected at the stern section of the flight deck where several Chance Vought Corsair Mk IV fighters belonging to 1846 Naval Air Squadron are seen parked with their wings folded. The forward section of HMS Colossus carries a quadruple 2-pounder pom-pom gun, two single 40mm Bofors guns and a twin 20mm Oerlikon cannon on sponsons. Chinese junks and sampans are seen under sail as the camera vessel steams through Victoria Harbour. A school of dolphins swims alongside the bow of the cameraman's vessel. END: 00:23:51

Notes

Acquisition: Harold Thomson retrieved this Kodachrome footage from the Royal Navy and passed it on to the IWM after meeting Neil Pilfold of the Department of Information Retrieval in 1980.
