ASCENSION ISLANDS SCENES

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: ADM 4832).

Synopsis

Scenes around the base at Ascension Island with Falklands survivors (?).

Shots show Victor tanker aircraft parked, and a cargo ship anchored out to sea with a helicopter carrying supplies. A launch brings several naval officers ashore. The small church is shown. Officers enter for a service, also attended by locals. Several shots show variously dressed naval ratings and others boarding a bus. Money is handed out. In some kind of stadium, a naval officer changes his trousers.

Notes

Summary: footage was received with no documentation and little identification. Information is partly based on the recollections of DPR(N)cameraman, Alan Fowler, in 1993, who, although he did not shoot this reel, was fairly certain that it showed survivors from HMS Sheffield (or similar) picking up money and clothing before their return to the UK. (See note to ADM 4821).

Remarks: the reel seems more than usually lacking in coherence - the cameraman seems to have no notion of how to build a story in the camera.
