Repatriated British prisoners arrive at Port Said in the British India cargo-passenger ship SS Talma. The actual exchange of prisoners had taken place at the Turkish port of Mersin. Most of the 865 Britons were merchant seamen.

Ex-POWs line the rail of the Talma. A group poses before the bridge. Large numbers of tea mugs are laid out on deck. HA.MS onto a group of men who wave and make victory signs. Men gaze out at the sights as the ship enters Port Said - one wears the Armoured Corps cap badge. Some men stand on the forward hatch cover which has been painted with a large Union Jack. MCU of two men in civilian clothing - identifying tags are attached to their overcoats. MS of Admiral (retired) Sir Walter Cowan, captured near Tobruk while serving as a Commander, RN - he leans against the side rail. Three officers chat together while relaxing in deckchairs - a Lieutenant RNVR, a Sub-Lieutenant (FAA) RNVR, and another. S P/O T White of Newcastle, formerly of 'Eskimo Nell' of Tobruk fame, opens a suitcase which he made from Red Cross food parcel tins while a POW of the Italians. Cut to MS from quayside to Talma alongside - a Union Jack and the ship's name are painted on the hull. Men disembark and WRNS dispense chocolate bars to them before they board a waiting train. Final shot of one ex-prisoner dressed in civilian clothing and carrying three suitcases, one in each hand and the third slung by a string over his shoulder - he smiles into the camera.
