AID TO CIVIL POWER (RUSHES 1)

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: ADM 697).

Synopsis

I. The cruiser HMS Liverpool: MS from the eyes of her to the bridge and then a pan right to where focsle is being hosed down. MCU as signalman on 'A' turret makes by semaphore, "Liverpool" - camera then drops to ship's name plate. At anchor off Malta - a shore party is briefed and departs in ship's motor launch. HA.MS from bridge of Liverpool whilst underway to starboard side of focsle deck and bow wash.

II. Staged (and unconvincing) sequences shot on Malta, showing a naval shore party engaged in police operations against armed rioters. Scenes depict naval party de-bussing and deploying in trouble area, using rifles and tear gas grenades to deter rioters, defending barricades, engaging snipers, etc.

III. The battleship HMS Howe anchors. MS forward along focsle. Ratings double on to deck through hatchway. Quartermaster pipes through ship's broadcasting system. Signalman secures cable flags to starboard focsle guard-rails. MS off port bow as Howe comes to port anchor. CUs of port cable holder paying out and signalman working flags as cable runs through hawse pipe.

IV. MS as HMS Liverpool's motor launch comes alongside starboard after gangway.

V. HMS Ocean. Various shots as Fairey Firefly and Supermarine Seafire aircraft alight on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier - several aircraft are waved off. Two Seafires land badly - one colliding with Flight Deck Control Officer's sight screen.

Unedited naval sequences.
