ANTI-SUBMARINE FRIGATES IN HOME WATERS AND DESTROYERS IN SLIEMA CREEK, MALTA

Synopsis

I. MS sequence as HMS Eastbourne (F.73) leaves Portsmouth, heading out towards Spithead. Whirlwind anti-submarine helicopter, minesweeper HMS Killiekrankie (M.1128), and a small motor vessel, Jato, also appear on screen.

II. Squid ATW. MCU of portside ATW on a CH Class destroyer as it fires - pan to starboard mortar, which is also firing - camera follows the pattern as it passes over the ship and into the sea, holding for the explosion of the charges. After twin 40mm is mothballed. (1953)

III. MS off the port bow of HMS Murray (F.91) underway in slight sea, flying flag signal. Cameravessel is pulling away.

IV. MS as cameraship overhauls HMS Whitby (F.36), passing up her starboard side to close on the starboard quarter of HMS Murray (F.91). Sea is calm.

V. General view of destroyers at anchor in Sliema Creek, Malta. MLS pan left over HMS Hogue (D.74), HMS Lagos (D.44), and HMS Daring (D.05), with three other destroyers in the background.

VI. Sequence showing 3-in-1 whaler under ordinary sail and in racing rig with spinnaker. At the end of the sequence the boat capsizes.

Notes

Remarks: film can be dated as between 1953 and 1959. Item I is rushes for the film "Gyro Compass", item II rushes for "ASDIC Type 170" and items V and VI rushes for "Boats and Boatwork". (Items III and IV unidentified source).
