Synopsis

AYY 173/1. 8 Oct. 1941 ca. Major General Keith Simmons addresses a gathering of officers. A Bren carrier moves along the road and turns into a ditch. Royal Engineers receiving blackboard instruction on demolition. The name of Sergeant Stratford is written on the board and he is instructed to blow up concrete pillars. This is then carried out. Cadets passing out parade. Four members of the Harriman Mission to Moscow arriving by Liberator and welcomed by Air Vice Marshal Pullford, General Percival, Major General Keith Simmons and others. War Savings hoarding with Chinese lettering. Return of Harriman Mission from Moscow with Lord Beaverbrook. Britain to supply Russia on Lease-Lend terms. Sir Thomas Shenton, Governor of Straits Settlements.

AYY 173/2. 3-6 Oct. 1941. Arrival of Australian reinforcements at Singapore. The band on the dockside plays Waltzing Matilda. The sick are taken off by Malayan Red Cross soldiers. Australian soldiers give the Victory sign. Coastal and river patrol boat "Shun An".

AYY 173/3. 24 and 25 Sept. 1941. Malay regiment in training. Indian troops (Dogra regiment) arriving and being driven off in Australian lorries.

AYY 173/4. 17 Nov. 1941. Punjabi and South Indian reinforcements arrive in Malaya, they give the Victory sign and are driven away in Australian lorries.

AYY 173/5. 15 Nov. 1941. Singapore Volunteer Corps (local Home Guard). Anti-tank mines and petrol bombs. Manning a pill box. Arrival of 25 pounders at Singapore from England, loading stores from an American ship. Arrival of ambulances and motor vehicles.

AYY 173/6. 21 Nov. 1941. Scenes at a recruiting centre, showing the many races joining up. Armoured and scout cars arrive from South Afrcia. Arrival of aircraft.

AYY 173/7. 29 Nov. 1941. Gurkha Battalion at Selangor. They play cards and a form of draughts. Kukris from Nepal are presented for inspection. Gurkhas perform a dance dressed as women.

AYY 173/8. 2 Dec. 1941. Major-General Heath, the "Victor of Keren", in Perak, talking to Indian soldiers. Indian Army Ordnance Corps detatchment attached to the Sikh Battalion maintaining motor cycles and other vehicles. They wear nets over their turbans for camouflage. Sikhs eating and playing hockey. Drill with 2 inch mortar and Bren gun. Loading practice for coastal defence.

30 Dec. 1941. Near the Siamese border, British Cycle Infantry cycle to Sungei Patani station and prepare to entrain. Motor transport and Bren carriers move along the road past the Alor Star black-domed mosque.

AYY 173/9. Troops and transport moving forward to the frontier in preparation for the anticipated enemy. Punjabi Musselmen sappers guard the frontier on Observation Hill. Gurkhas relaxing in a tin mine. Damage in Singapore after the first unexpected raid and rounding up of Japanese the next morning.

AYY 173/10. 12 Jan. 1942. Indian sappers and miners mining bridge in Kuala Lumpur. Permitted looting by the remaining civilian population. Scenes at Seremban, bags of rice being handed out to Chinese. Rubber and rubber factories burning (Scorched Earth policy).

AYY 173/11. Jan. 1942. Bofors anti-aircraft gun, Brewster fighters and troop-carrying Lockheeds land with Australian troops. Exercise watched by General Wavell and the Sultan of Johore. Chinese girls making Australian leather into boots for the RAF and RAAF.

AYY 173/12. 5 Jan. 1942. Raid on Kuala Lumpur. Chinese and Malays digging themselves shelter trenches in Singapore. 4 Nov. 1941. Pre-fighting shots of General Wavell at Singapore inspecting Hong Kong and Singapore Royal Artillery and the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.

AYY 173/13. 19 Jan. 1942. Landing of British reinforcements, voluntary evacuation of civilians. The Bishop of Singapore. Bomb damage and wooden houses burning, troops fighting flames.

AYY 173/14. 4 Feb. 1942. Air raids on Singapore, Japanese bombers in the air, people running for shelter. Shots of Johore Causeway after it had been blown up on 31 Jan. Burning oil tanks and train. Damage to Government House. Governor Sir Shenton Thomas visiting damaged areas. Chinese Volunteer Force (organised by officers lent by Chiang Kai-Shek).

Various stories filmed for inclusion in a Malayan documentary film entitled "From Singapore to Alor Star".
