FARMING IN THE FEDERATION

This film is held by the BFI (ID: 59494).

Synopsis

Outlining farming methods in the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, and highlighting in particular the importance of rainfall.

The film opens with a shot of an African on a tractor, but then focuses predominantly on the experiences of European farmers in the federation. The film shows the 'solid and comfortable style of life' enjoyed by the Europeans - shown in a swimming pool and outside a house - before highlighting the importance of rainfall in directing farming methods. First, it shows the dry land which serves as 'ranching country' and emphasises the importance of irrigation (for example in the production of sugar). Next, a diagram indicates a 'low/medium' rainfall area where the ranching can be 'rather more intensive'. Modern farming methods are shown, and the film also now shows the growth of crops and vegetables. A further animated diagram (showing water half-way up) introduces a discussion on area of medium rainfall where 'good crops' can be grown. Dairy farming is also shown here. In the area of high rainfall, there is intensive farming, with the principle crops maize and tobacco. Africans are shown working on the land here, although the film also emphasises the modern technology used by the Europeans. Further scenes of the tobacco industry follow. Finally, in an area of very high rainfall sub-tropical fruits and soft wood are harvested. Again Europeans supervise African workers as they cut down tress and pick the fruits. The commentator outlines the expansion and modern developments within the Federation, showing 'research stations' and noting the work of the Ministry of Agriculture. He concludes that 'skilled farming backed by high quality research and advisory services is continually opening up new lands and working the old more progressively'.
