the FALKLAND ISLANDS CAMPAIGN - AN ARMY PRESENTATION: PART 1

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: DRA 1490).

Synopsis

First in a series of four Army films giving an account of the battle for the Falkland Islands from the personal viewpoints of people involved, including officers of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines in addition to Army personnel.

Part 1 is concerned primarily with the early stages of the operation, from preparation and sailing from the UK to arrival in the South Atlantic and selection of the initial landing site. Captain Ian Gardiner, commanding X-Ray Company, 45 Commando Royal Marines, talks about life onboard Canberra and the Landing Ships Logistic (LSL) during the passage to the South Atlantic, including aspects of training, both onboard ship and at Ascension Island, and lighter subjects such as 'Crossing the Line' ceremonies. Captain Gardiner also gives his view of the problems posed by the terrain and climate, and how he and his men were able to adapt to the conditions. Captain Chris Brown of 148 Battery Royal Artillery discusses his role as a naval gunfire forward observer during the operation to recapture South Georgia; in this position he witnessed the landings made at Grytviken by M Company, 42 Commando Royal Marines and the surrender of Argentine forces on the island. The damaged Argentine submarine Santa Fe is shown where she came to rest, partially submerged in Grytviken harbour. Commander Tim Yarker, Royal Navy, who served as Group Aviation Officer, gives a naval perspective, discussing the taskforce commander's overall plan, the sinkings of the Argentinean cruiser General Belgrano and the Royal Navy's type 42 destroyer HMS Sheffield (D.80), and the considerations taken into account in choosing a location for landings on the Falkland Islands. Lieutenant-Colonel J F Rickett, 1st Battalion Welsh Guards, acts as the film's main presenter, linking different speakers, and himself speaks briefly on the preparations made by 5 Brigade for the voyage to the Falkland Islands and on aspects of the training undertaken during the passage.
