ENGINEERING FOR PEACE

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: DRA 1504).

Synopsis

Army Documentary film recording some of the projects undertaken by the Royal Engineers in the Arabian Peninsula during the mid 1960s. These include the road constructed from Dhala to Aden, including a description of the difficulties encountered, equipment used and organisational considerations. Other projects carried out at the same time include a well-drilling programme, providing fresh water for local people, the construction of a large permanent Army camp, the construction and maintenance of airstrips and runways, and internal security duties, such as mine clearance and the building of fortifications, fences and checkpoints. In Bahrain the engineers were responsible for erecting a number of buildings at RAF Muharraq, and a detachment was sent to the island of Al Yas in the Ton Class minesweeper HMS Beachampton (M.1107) to carry out an extensive survey of the island. Recreational opportunities and other services provided by the Royal Engineers, such as postal facilities, are also covered.
