NORTHERN BURMA: 36TH DIVISION GUNNERS DIG IN A 25-POUNDER AT PINWE

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: FUB 14).

Synopsis

At Pinwe in northern Burma, British gunners of 36th Division (probably 178th Field Regiment Royal Artillery) dig an emplacement for a 25-pounder field gun.

Shots of men digging a gun pit. Digging in a gun's circular firing platform. Views of manhandling a 25-pounder. Adjusting sights and elevation etc with good close-ups. More digging. Series of shots from many angles of a soldier testing his Bren light machine gun (with leaf sight). Gunners carrying a firing platform. Rope is tied onto a gun and the gun hauled into position. The gun crew sit on the weapon and enjoy mugs of tea. Close-ups of the gunners.

Notes

While very narrow in scope, this film gives a good impression of the heavy manual labour required to use artillery pieces. Coverage is provided from many angles, and the closing shot of men with tea is very apt. Also the footage of the Bren gun is useful for illustrating the weapon.
