LANDINGS ON RAMREE ISLAND

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: FUB 71).

Synopsis

At Ramree island, on the Arakan coast of Burma, troops of 26th Indian Division make an amphibious landing.

Royal Air Force and Royal Artillery personnel stacking kit on the deck of a ship. Men cleaning personal weapons; one man looks down the bore of his Bren gun. Battery Sergeant Major Searle, probably of 160th Field Regiment Royal Artillery, conducts a group of men singing to pass the time. Close-up of Searle. Men singing. Second Officer J F C Mann of the Merchant Navy on watch on the bridge. Another ship directly ahead. Long shot of landing craft and ships. A striking dazzle-painted Fairmile (B?) motor launch passes. Long shots. Liberator heavy bombers overhead. Smoke drifting in the distance. Small launch foreground against smoke. Looking up towards the sky; in the foreground the mast with pennants flying, and beyond the bombers return from their attack. Men climb down to a landing craft. Heading ashore. Men off landing craft and into the water. A figure, apparently '44', written in the sand. More men coming ashore. Sea horizon; smoking funnels in distance. A war correspondent named Atkinson, sits on the sand and types on a typewriter. Royal Navy beachmaster using a loud speaker. LCM dropping ramp. Universal carrier passes. Alligator tracked amphibian coming ashore. DUKW ('Duck') amphibious trucks drive into the sea. Bearded navy beachmaster on loudspeaker. Panning view of the beach.
