the GEN NO 4 : the Voice of the Service

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: GEN 4).

Synopsis

I. "Ploesti." A survey of the policy of Bulgaria's King Boris III towards Fascism (earlier film of Bulgarian Premier Bogdan Filov visiting Berchtesgaden and German mounted troops entering Sofia), with reference to Allied plans to bomb Rumanian oil-fields. Emphasis given to (pro-Russian) unrest in Bulgaria before Boris' death. Liberators (based in Benghazi) prepare for raid on Ploesti: refineries ablaze.

II. "It's a Fact." Spitfire (based in South Africa) adapted for ground attack (4 cannon, 1 250 lb. bomb).

III. "In Passing." a. Chinese guerrillas dynamite a bridge (footage apparently used by Japanese to seek German sympathy). b. French POWs remove sandbags from Concorde monument, Paris (evidence of Hitler's "overconfidence").

IV. Berlin. Germans donate metal ornaments etc for use in war-factories (Film at least 18 months old).

V. "Hudson." Lockheed Hudson retired from service (Film of depth-charge attack on U-Boat).

VI. "Jungle Airfield." In West African "story book" settings, an airfield is cleared, Hurricanes are constructed and take off.

VII. "News Digest." a. Horsa glider crashes into tree. b. Polish RAF apprentices. c. Pompeii: British airmen visit ruins; Vesuvius erupting. d. Wellington drops new self-inflating dinghy.

VIII. "Greece." At a Middle East airfield, Greek airmen fly Hurricanes, and relax.
