Synopsis

German newsreel presents first screening of Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and Hong Kong and the victory parade through the latter.

On board a Japanese aircraft carrier in the Pacific, Nakajima B5N2 torpedo bombers and Aichi D3A1 dive-bombers stand ready before taking off. Air-to-air views. Bombs are released and hit planes parked on Wheeler Field. Stills with Japanese captions show hangars alight and also Ford Island in Pearl Harbor with USN capital ships moored alongside and course of torpedoes indicated. Extensive coverage of the capture of Hong Kong starts with aircrews (pilot carries sword) climbing into Kawasaki Ki-32 light bombers and taking off. Cockpit view and aerial view of petrol storage tanks and harbour of Hong Kong. Bombs released. Meanwhile on land infantry with light field guns advance towards Kowloon and capture first prisoners, including Indian soldiers. Japanese proceed along road marked Tai Po before entering Kowloon, apparently accompanied by a Scottish soldier. Leaflets calling for calm are distributed by Japanese occupier and a bus fitted for broadcasting is visible in crowded street. Concern of Japanese for human life is further illustrated when large European woman emerges from building with Japanese escort bearing large white banner marked Peace Mission. Party walks with two little dogs towards shore facing Hong Kong island. Failure of peace mission prompts combined assault on island: troop carriers cross sea, artillery pounds Victoria Peak and aerial views show bomb damage. On 25 December Japanese advance through streets of Hong Kong, past blazing storage tanks and up crane marked Babcock and Wilcox Ltd. Many captured Bren carriers, respirators, field guns and Vickers machine guns convey the extent of the British defeat. Soldiers and sailors sit in captivity in a park next to the ferry terminal. British Army and RAF officers emerge from New Oriental Building, over which Japanese flag flies, and shake hands with their conquerors. Victory parade has planes fly in formation over island and Lieutenant-General Sakai with Vice-Admiral Nimii on horseback lead forces through streets of colony. Route is partly lined by Japanese soldiers who hold the ashes of their fallen comrades in small casks. (Item 3 of DW 613/24/42 of 3/6/1942).
