Synopsis
I. Funeral of Adolf Hhnlein. State funeral of founder of NSKK takes place in Armeemuseum cupola hall. Hitler enters, followed by Bormann, and kisses widow's hand and condoles with other relatives of one of his oldest followers. Funeral march from Siegfried. Goebbels delivers funeral oration before Hitler lays wreath on coffin of Hhnlein, only third German to be awarded highest class of German Order. Hitler again consoles widow and pats daughter on cheek. Coffin is borne our by NSKK men past Feldherrnhalle en route to city's Northern Cemetery.
II. Raeder visits Fleet in Norway. Grossadmiral Raeder converses with naval officers while travelling in fast escort vessel off snow-capped peaks of coastline near Narvik. Raeder is piped aboard Admiral Scheer and, escorted by Kapitn zur See Meendsen-Bohlken, inspects officers and men before addressing whole crew. He reportedly thanked men for successful action against British and American convoys to Russia. Raeder later lays wreath at cemetery to honour Narvik dead of 1940.
III. Reichsarbeitsdienst men dig tank ditch in Southern Russia. Animated map of southern sector, from Odessa to Kerch. Motorised unit of RAD drives forward towards operational area, waving to Russian peasants by roadside, past sign to "Werch-Chitrowo". Other RAD men, all armed, proceed east on foot and by cycle. RAD camp shows exemplary order. Men start to dig anti-tank ditch, then pause for breakfast.
IV. German advance east of Kharkov. In area east of Kharkov Pzkpfw IVs have barrels cleaned and shells loaded aboard. Tank crews are briefed for attack north east of Kharkov to surround and destroy part of Timoshenko's right wing and to broaden bridgehead east of River Donetz. Motorcyclist troops move out of Russian village comprising mud houses and thatch. Pzkpfw IVs set off down slope, followed by Pzkpfw IIs and Sdkfz 251 pulling gun, in order to cut off retreating enemy. Pzkpfw IV fords water. Achtung Minen sign indicates minefield through which sappers have already marked path. Tanks and infantry press on as artillery opens fire over sunlit plain. Russian shells explode near Sdkfz 251 marked with score tally on side, which fires at Russian infantry positions. 15cm sIG 33 opens fire. German artillery and tanks continue firing till dusk. Separate views of burning Matilda II tank and another Matilda with English lettering and DOL Archangel marking; commentary states Russians did not even have time to translate script. Russian fighter passes overhead. Camouflaged StuG IIIs advance, one bearing swastika ensign. Camera pans 180 degrees across infantry advancing over plain backed up by armour. Russians surrender after emerging from dugouts on plain; one appears to fall dead in distance. (End of Reel 1) Germans hurl grenades into trenches causing Russians to emerge with hands up. Russian dead lie beside 45mm PTP obr 1932g anti-tank gun. Some of reported 25,000 prisoners walk past tail of Russian plane and captured armour.
V. German ground and air attack on Sebastopol. Animated map of Crimea. Several (captured Renault) Infanterie Schlepper UEs drive along dusty road past anti-tank defences in arid hilly area, bringing up supplies. (Captured Czech) 30.5cm Mrs is loaded and fired against fortress of Sebastopol. 15cm K 18 and 15cm sIG 33 open fire; one 15cm K 18 has five score rings round barrel. Empty shell cases and boxes suggest force of artillery assault. Generalmajor Wolf, just awarded Oak Leaves to Knights Cross, stands with officers looking at map. Sappers clear mines from path of German advance against fanatical courage of Russian soldiers. Dead Russians, wrecked concrete bunkers and anti-tank obstacles and guns suggest Russian defeat, though Russian shells land near Germans who fire mortars and MG 34. Map shows defences of Sebastopol. 30.5cm Mrs[t] opens fire. Ju 87s pass over Crimean coast and release bombs on clearly visible Sebastopol. View of Knights Cross holder Hauptmann Schwedtler at controls of Ju 87, ground level views of explosions and aerial film of Russian flak puffs.
VI. German planes and Italian motor torpedo boat attack Mediterranean convoy. Film of Messerschmitt Bf 110s and Junkers Ju 88s in flight precedes captured British newsreel film of convoy coming under air attack, showing sky peppered with flak puffs and cargo ship receiving direct hit. Italian film shows MS motor torpedo boat firing torpedo, allegedly after breaking through to convoy, causing another cargo ship to explode amidships. Wrecked ship sinks.
VII. German and Italian forces close in on Tobruk. Animated map of Libya. Rommel stands in desert in conversation with officers, as commentary reports capture of Bir Hacheim and intention to sever line between Tobruk and El Gazala. German armour advances across desert to sound of "Panzer rollen im Afrikakorps". Sappers clear and mark path through minefield and other German troops dig in in the desert after ring around British is reportedly closed. Italian anti-aircraft gun opens fire, bringing down twin-engined British plane, and Italian ground forces advance firing towards El Gazala. Stukas dive-bomb Tobruk with characteristic scream and explosions pepper the sand. Rommel looks through binoculars while standing with Italian officers wearing Africana armbands. Blazing British tanks and trucks suggest rout of British. Rommel talks with soldiers and stands in armoured car, marked with a swastika for identification from the air. Sappers move forward to lay bridge over ditch. Tanks and motorised units pass Rommel and a wrecked Valentine lies by the roadside. Over views of British and Indian prisoners, commentary reports capture on 21 June of Tobruk with more than 28,000 prisoners. Item ends with triumphant montage of advancing armour to sound of "Panzer rollen im Afrikakorps".
