INDIAN NEWS PARADE NO 154 (1946-02-22)

Synopsis

I. "THE CENTRAL LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY" A crowd is gathered outside a building (presumably the Council Chamber) as members of the Central Legislative Assembly arrive for the first sitting of the sixth Legislative Assembly at New Delhi. Some people are holding up placards. Shots of various members arriving, one elderly gentleman is being carried up the stairs to the building by two men. Amongst the people arriving are Mrs. Sarojini Naidu who is coming as a visitor, and Nawabzada Liaquat Ali Khan. Most shots depict the Assembly Members as they get out of their cars and walk up a short path and stairs towards the building. The various political groups are dressed in different fashion: according to the commentary the Government members can be identified by their European clothes, while the Congressmen are wearing white Gandhi cap (or 'topi' cap) and members of the Muslim League are seen to be wearing black caps. The commentary mentions the election of Mr. (Ganesh Vasudev) Mavlankar as the President of the Assembly during the course of the meeting. The camera moves in closer to show individual members. Later on there are shots of people leaving the building and entering a garden, most likely situated in the courtyard of the building.

II. "VIJAYALAKSHMI RETURNS TO INDIA" At Karachi Airport, a crowd of people is assembled next to the airfield to welcome Mrs. Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit, an ex-minister of the United Provinces and sister of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. There are shots of the plane as it is approaching the runway. Later on Mrs. Pandit is seen as she is coming down the steps. A few people are waiting at the bottom of the stairs to greet the guest of honour. Mrs. Pandit is given a garland of flowers, one man in the crowd is holding out a notepad and pen to her, seemingly trying to get her autograph. Mrs. Pandit is seen slowly walking away from the plane surrounded by onlookers, her entourage and the small reception committee. She stops to get her picture taken. The commentary mentions that Mrs. Pandit is returning to India from a lecturing tour in the United States and shall be standing for election to the Provincial Assembly in the United Provinces.

III. "THE BURMA VICTORY EXHIBITION" The Convocation Hall at Bombay University is the venue of the Burma Victory Photo Exhibition. The establishing shots show the exterior of the University building, including a clock tower . Major Norman Price of the Public Relations Directorate and a group of Army and Navy Officers in uniform are standing underneath the sign "Burma Victory Photographic Exhibition", awaiting the arrival of H.E. Sir John Colville who will be opening the exhibition. Sir John is seen arriving in a limousine and getting out of the car along with his wife and a few other ladies. The group is greeted by Major Norman Price and the other members of the welcome committee. The commentary explains that the exhibition displays 250 photographs which were taken by cameramen of the Public Relations Directorate during the Burma campaign. The photos document the work of the 14th Army; there are also pictures which illustrate the Women's Services' contribution to the war effort. There are some dark interior views of the exhibition, some showing visitors looking at the photographs. There is a brief shot of Sikh soldier looking at the pictures. The final shots show Sir John and his group leaving in their car.

VI. "H.H. THE AGA KHAN FELICITATED BY ISMAILI KHOJA LEADERS" A group of people is awaiting the arrival of the Aga Khan, men and women are seated separately. The gathering takes place in the run-up to the the Aga Khan's Diamond Jubilee at the Aga Khan Hall in Bombay. The Ismaili Khoja community meet to honour their leader. The commentary explains that the members of the community are addressed by Mr. Mohammed Hussain Fazalbhoy who outlines the purpose of the Aga Khan's Diamond Jubilee Fund. There are brief panning shots over the crowd. Then we see the Aga Khan speaking himself, as the commentary points out, he outlines how the proceeds of the fund would benefit a number of Ismaili charities. Later on, their Highnesses are entertained by Mr. Mohammed Hussain Fazalbhoy at White House. Shots of various personalities. The commentary points out that the details of the upcoming weighing-in ceremony are being discussed. During tea, men and women are seated separately again.

V."MAYOR OF BOMBAY ENTERTAINS BRITISH PARLIAMENTARY DELEGATION" The Mayor of Bombay, Dr. Alban D'Souza, welcomes the Members of the Parliamentary Delegation at the Municipal Corporation Building. The guests are having tea at a large banquet table. Among the guests are Mr. Bhulabhai Desai, Mr. S.K. Patil and Sir Homi Mody who is sitting next to Mrs. Nichol. There are shots of Sir Homi Mody and Mrs. Nichol chatting while the lady is enjoying a cigarette. Other guests at this informal meeting are Mr. Bottomley and Major Wyatt. The Mayor is the first person to address the group, followed by Mrs. Nichol and Mr. Nicholson. At the end, the guests are presented with garlands.
