INDIAN NEWS PARADE NO 65 (9/6/1944)

Synopsis

I. "T.S. CHOCKALINGHAM LAUNCHES A NEW DAILY: 'DINASARI' INAUGURATED" Chockalingham launches the new Tamil daily newspaper "Dinasari" at a meeting. The newspaper will not be run for profit but will be "turned into a trust for the journalists who work on it". Scenes of speeches given by celebrities. "Don't ask whether what you read pleases you...ask if it's correct said Doctor Rajaji C Rajagopalachari". Scene of first issue of the paper and Mr T K Ghosh, "its first newsboy".

II. "COTTAGE INDUSTRIES - A DOLL IS BORN" Film showing doll makers at work. Commentary comically notes how their skills could be transferred to beauty parlour work, school teaching, surgery and hairdressing. Commentary ends with: "they turn out the ideal wife --- beautiful and dumb".

III. "PROSPECTING FOR EXPLOSIVES" Discovery of sulphur, material for making explosives, by geologists in a hill range in North West India. Holes are bored for experimental blasting, after which the bits are "used to make bombs for Berlin and Burma". Scenes of hill men surveying scene.

IV. "FOOD RATIONING COMES TO DELHI" New Delhi "goes over to rationing" as the Food Member, the Honourable Sir J P Srivastava, inspects the city's rationing arrangements and food storehouses. Commentary notes that although "ration cards look complicated,...in practice it's a simple business...fair shares all round and enough for everybody".
