Synopsis

I. "BENGAL LOSES A DISTINGUISHED SON: SIR PRAFULLA CHANDRA RAY" Tribute to the life of Sir P C Ray, teacher, scientist and philanthropist. Commentary notes his discovery of a new compound in chemistry "but he did not rest until he had given his students more than a training in chemistry. 'Do not set your heart on making money' he said, 'but add to the world's knowledge.' "

II. "MADRAS WATER SUPPLY ASSURED" Mr Pulla Reddy tells Madras citizens that the Pundi reservoir ensured each one would get twenty five gallons of water a day. His Excellency the Governor Sir Arthur Hope opens waterworks, "and from ceremonial stone to the last iron bolt, it's Indian made". It is switched on, and commentary states that "the water famine of 1938 will never be repeated".

III. "INDIANS ABROAD PROMOTE GOODWILL" Captain Sirdar Nanial Singh and Pandit Hirday Nath Kunzru, on tour with the Indian Defence Council meet Army Officers detailed to show them "how the Middle East has become one vast base camp". Scenes of a tea party and Saudi Arabian ministers and Lord Moyne, Minister Resident "in a country freed from the fear of Nazi conquest". Pandit Kunzru makes contact with neighbouring countries, although commentary notes, "maybe we don't know as much as we ought about them".

IV. "LATEST PICTURES OF THE WAR IN ITALY" Documenting Allied progress through Italy in 1944. Scenes of German prisoners of war and Allied wounded as the land is cleared of mines. Commentary notes that "roundly defeated", the enemy plays for time. "Every road is cut, every bridge destroyed." Bulldozers clear away rubble from the "once neat and lovely town of Palena". Lieutenant-General Alfrey meets Indian soldiers of the Baluch regiment on the front line.

V. "BLASTING THE JAPS OUT OF MANIPUR" Scenes of a twisting mountain road, out of range of Japanese guns, leading to the front line in Manipur, Burma. Commentary notes that "Burma is a fight for the good roads. The Tiddim road is one of them". Bombers attack gun flashes of Japanese positions as Infantry prepare for the "last phase" and advance pass "torn concrete" and "twisted trees". Inspection of a Japanese spigot mortar and the "guns and tanks made to batter Indian villages... now just a heap of scrap".
