INDIAN NEWS PARADE NO 69 (7/7/1944)

Synopsis

I. "MODERN SCIENCE PAYS TRIBUTE TO THE SUN GOD" Devotees of the sun at a Solarium, a twentieth-century "temple of the sun". Scenes of children and the sick receiving treatment from the electric sunlight of the solarium. The Maharajah of Nawanga purchased the solarium for his state after receiving treatment from one in Europe. Reference is made to the third century sun god Surya Dev.

II. "IN CONVOY WITH THE ROYAL INDIAN NAVY" Film of the Royal Indian Navy (RIN), "steel sheepdogs of our merchant ships". Scenes of a deck being cleaned. A midshipman hands a message to the Captain, who informs his flotilla that enemy submarines are attacking the convoy. A "mathematically calculated hell" is then unleashed on the submarines by the RIN. After the signal given for a successful action, the convoy continues behind the guardian vessels. A Catalina emerges, communicating with vessels below.

III. "MORE I.A.F. SQUADRONS ON THE BURMA FRONT" Indian Air Force (IAF) men enter the Burmese battle zone, emerging from lorries and heading straight for the mess tent. Scenes of radio telephones being fixed and wired, planes being prepared for battle and a pilot taking off, "on what may be the most exciting moment of his life".

IV. "THE JAPANESE RETREAT FROM IMPHAL AND KOHIMA" Captured Japanese armament at Kohima after Japanese retreat. Lieutenant-General Slim and Major General Cowan "study the ground, make notes while the ruin of battle is still fresh" Advance continues through Burma, as supply trains get underway, tanks push up the Kohima Road to crush road blocks and troops fight day and night in "impossible" conditions of the monsoon rains. Commentary notes, "Allies have turned storms of rain into storms of hot steel".
