INDIAN NEWS PARADE NO 73 (4/8/1944)

Synopsis

I. "ST. DUNSTAN'S IN INDIA" Colonel Sir Clutha Mackenzie greets Sir Maurice Hallett at Dehra Dun's new home for war blinded Indian Soldiers. The hostel "is run along the lines of its famous namesake in London, where men are taught to see not with eyes but with their unquenchable spirit". The soldiers learn to call their blindness "a case of shortsightedness".

II. "MECCA MEDINA ALLADIN ENDOWMENT" Courtly scenes at Hyderabad with the His Exalted Highness the Nizam of Hyderabad witnessing the foundation of a trust for destitute Muslims, set up by Nawab Ahmed Nawaz Jung. Commentary notes how Mrs Sarojini Naidu "gave a touch of informality to the arrival of high dignitaries" such as the Prince of Berar and Nawab Medhi Nawaz Jung, The Resident and the Nawab of Chhatr greet fellow Princes.

III. "ENSURING INDIA'S FOOD SUPPLIES" Commentary on the status of food supplies in India. The commentary likens the situation to a vast hotel with four hundred million guests. Scenes include Doctor Ackroyd, nutrition expert, Rani Phul Kumari, on behalf of India's women and Food Member Sir J P Srivastava who "reported progress". Commentary mentions forty two million people under rationing system who "know that it does work and works well".

IV. "CHINDITS AND CHINESE CAPTURE MOGAUNG" Chindits in action behind Japanese lines as they approach a village. Chinese units under General Stilwell enjoy mobility of mule pack as they move up on the Chindits flank, take Mogaung railway station and then join the Chindits. Hats were swapped to celebrate victory. Scenes of air support for the "final drive". Firing between Chindits and Japanese on the banks of the Mogaung river. The town of Mogaung finally falls.
