Synopsis

I. "GANDHI AND JINNAH NEGOTIATE FOR COMMUNAL UNITY" Gandhi arrives in white car from Birla House to Jinnah's residence, a short distance away on Malabar Hill, in Bombay. The house is surrounded by war correspondents. Jinnah and Gandhi greet one another before proceeding to Conference Room upstairs. Jinnah is "hospitable" to correspondents, offering them carpets to sit on. Jinnah and Gandhi emerge after a three-hour conference, with Jinnah "dodging questions" and Gandhi preferring to walk home.

II. "THE MERCHANT NAVY TO WHOM WE OWE SO MUCH" Sir Hugh Dow, the Governor of Sind, inaugurates Karachi's "magnificent and practical tribute to the men of the Merchant Navy", a club. Commentary states that all ships nowadays "are a front line fortress under constant threat". Scenes of the club bar with guests.

III. "BUILDING UP THE WOMEN'S VOLUNTARY SERVICE" Led by the Rani of Phaltan, Poona's Voluntary Women War Workers go to Government House in Bombay for Lady Colville's party. Commentary notes that "Lady Colville told them some of the things other women are doing in Europe". Although less exciting, "their work is just as essential".

IV. "LORD WAVELL WITH INDIA'S DEFENDERS ON THE BURMA FRONT" Lord Wavell receives the Royal Salute on Imphal's air strip. With Arjun Singh, Lord Wavell meets men of Indian Air Force. His Excellency the Viceroy Lord Wavell "assures the Maharajah of Manipur that war damage will be made good". Naga Chiefs present gifts to Viceroy Wavell including "blankets, swords, embroidered cloths and even a chicken in a basket". The scarlet blanket of the Naga Chief shows the "imperturbable dignity" of their head men.

V. "CHINDITS FIGHT JAPS, JUNGLE AND MONSOON IN CENTRAL BURMA" Scenes of Chindits advancing through Burmese jungle, hacking routes through the trees and crossing rivers with bamboo bridges. Modern mechanised vehicles/vessels "get a hole" and so mules are called upon as part of long range penetration groups, "and their tactics have just about penetrated the skulls of Tokyo's master men".
