INDIAN NEWS PARADE NO 82 (6/10/1944)

Synopsis

I. "SHARK FISHING IN MADRAS WATERS" Madras fishermen go shark hunting in a catamaran made of logs tied together with rope and a sail. Boat is ridden out over the breaking waves. A wounded shark is caught and is used to snare a second shark. Fishermen stun shark with pole before returning home. Commentary states that "shark's liver oil does service for the oil that before the war was got from the cod". Scenes of the shark being washed and cut open as liver is removed into a pot for transport to a factory.

II. "FREE DANES IN INDIA PRESENT MOBILE CANTEEN TO THE ALLIED TROOPS" Two hundred Free Danes of India present a canteen to the President of the Women's Voluntary Services, Mrs Casey. She meets General Stuart and prominent Danish residents. Commentary mentions common boast of Danes that "Denmark was an almost perfect democracy". Scenes of Mrs Casey with a cup of canteen tea.

III. "INDIAN TROOPS FROM ITALY ON THEIR WAY HOME ON LEAVE" Indian troops from the Italian front line rest at an Army Rest Camp in Egypt, a halfway house on their journey home. Indians are served meals and watch others swimming. A tour is conducted around the town, "for those interested in Egyptology, hieroglyphics and cognate studies".. Kit bags are labelled for India and the Sergeant bids his troops farewell.

IV. "WAR'S YOUNGEST V.C. GETS ROUSING RECEPTION ON RETURN TO INDIA". The Commander-in-Chief's ADC's meet twenty one year old Kamal Ram at Delhi airport for his talk with the C-in-C. In Lahore, Ram receives garlands from his colleagues in the Eighth Punjab Regiment. Scenes of men in parade; "Brigadier Carpendale was there to give him a pat on the back". Ram's Commanding Officer joined in the commendations and Ram is chaired back to regimental headquarters by British troops.
