INDIAN NEWS PARADE NO 90 (1/12/1944)

Synopsis

I. "THERE ARE MANY WAYS OF PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE" Mrs Casey (wife of the Governor of Bengal) visits a boys' orphanage in Calcutta. Scene of Mrs Casey handing out sweets to boys. Commentary notes that "British women in India are registering to give the planners of the present a view of what they are doing in the war, where there is still room for them to do more".

II. "BRITISH WOMEN TAKE OVER MEN'S DUTIES IN INDIA" Film marking the arrival of women from England to take up wartime duties and release men into the "global battlefield". Commentary states, "Manpower means Womenpower". Scenes of women with their Commanding Officer.

III. "COMMEMORATING SHIVAJI" General Sir Noel Beresford Peirse presides over the ceremony for the new Mahrattas recruits. Walking between regimental colours, new recruits take the oath. Frequent reference is made in the ceremony to the spirit and words of Shivaji. Mahrattas play their own sport (called "Malkhans" in the commentary sheet), followed by scenes featuring boys, veterans of the Italian and Burmese campaigns, "and last but still honoured.....pensioners from campaigns that live in their memories".

IV. "WE ARE DOING OUR BEST AND A BIT MORE" His Exalted Highness the Nizam of Hyderabad and the Prince of Berar attend the annual exhibition of Hyderabad Industrialists. The Nizam cuts ribbon at opening ceremony. Commentary notes that the Nizam attended the event every year to "set his subjects an example", adding that "Hyderabad should see the best that their own industries could do". Furthermore, a "liberal reward" was promised by the Nizam to inventors. Scenes of a stall showing the Exhibition layout and another of the city's future buildings.

V. "PATIALA'S RULER WITH THE FIGHTING FOURTH" Punjab Premier Malik Khizar Hyat Khan reviews Indian troops in Italy "to put them back into touch, get things into perspective". Commentary notes that "what these men are doing will be put down as the hinge on which the door to victory was swung wide open".

VI. "INSIDE BURMA WITH THE R.A.F." Scenes of giant Liberator bombers carrying out bombing missions over Burma in line with the communiqu script: "yesterday our bombers attacked enemy targets in strength".
