INDIAN NEWS PARADE NO 95 (5/1/1945)

Synopsis

I. "RACING SEASON OPENS AT THE ARAKAN TURF CLUB" Racing scenes at the Arakan Turf Club, Burma. Gordon Richards features among the jockeys. Queues of soldiers waiting at paying out windows and later running into the sea.

II. "IN LIBERATED BURMA" Village scenes of former Japanese-held village of Tamu featuring damaged, roofless pagoda with makeshift bamboo covering and the "holy men of Tamu". Women bring offerings to the priests in religious procession.

III. "FROM KENNEDY PEAK TO KALEMO" Jammu and Kashmir troops of the 5th Indian Division press forward through tall elephant grass, aided by signallers and donkeys laden with supplies. Close ups of figures at base of pagoda tower, and religious statues. Villagers offer chickens to troops, "grateful for that peace which the soldiers have brought them" as they tour village.

IV. "OVER THE CHINDWIN RIVER" Scenes of troops crossing river, food supplies being loaded onto small craft and carried up banks by men. Mules astride rafts and later being unloaded. An American plane makes a basket food drop for troops below. Elephants roll logs with trunks to build "the jungle version of the Bailey Bridge" across the Chindwin river to create crossing for "men who are reconquering Burma". Army trucks later cross newly constructed bridge.
