ROVING REPORT - THE JUNGLE WAR

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: ITN 108).

Synopsis

Report on how British forces are countering Dr Sukarno's efforts to undermine the new Federation of Malaysia.

Indonesia has failed to disrupt the Malaysian economy (interview with Singapore Finance Minister who says state can survive the blockade "ad infinitum") and is now concentrating on military infiltration and communist subversion in Borneo. British forces engaged in opposing the enemy receive training at a Jungle Warfare School in Malaya, where Gurkhas are seen engaging in an ambush during which "enemy corpses" are lifted out by helicopter. Helicopters in fact play the key tactical role in the war in the Borneo jungle and fly soldiers to the small front line bases where local patrols are mounted. British have the support of the local tribesmen who reportedly remember the conditions of peace and justice under British rule and offer the soldiers hospitality and information about the movements of the Indonesian intruders. Dangers and difficulties which face the troops fighting this guerrilla war are matched by the task which confronts the British forces who are assisting the local police force in repressing the Clandestine Communist Organisation, sponsored by China. Report concludes (after film of a typical raid on a house) that in the long term the bigger threat to Malaysia may be communist subversion rather than direct military attacks by Indonesian regulars.
