ROVING REPORT NO 34

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: ITN 122).

Synopsis

Report in three sections.

1. British Gurkha troops guard against Indonesian infiltration in Borneo. Soldiers are seen at a front camp receiving supplies dropped from a Beverly, on patrol in the jungle, and preparing a landing spot for the helicopters which play such a vital role in this war of confrontation. British major in command praises his Gurkhas as well disciplined, tough and cheerful troops. Film contrasts tribal houses destroyed by Indonesian guerrillas with a British soldier offering food to native infants. 2. Tunnel through Mont Blanc now links France and Italy. Film traces various stages in the building of the recently completed tunnel from first drilling in 1959 to the link up between both ends in August 1962. 3. Sporting ways of crossing the English Channel. Successful and unsuccessful methods range from swimming, water-skiing and ballooning to using a beer barrel with outboard motor attached and a floating tractor.
