ROVING REPORT NO 45

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: ITN 130).

Synopsis

Report in two sections.

1. Report on the military tension on the border between Sikkim and China reveals the vulnerability of the small Indian protectorate. Film of a few Chinese soldiers with cameras gives no indication of the size of the enemy forces. King Palden Thondup Namgyal assumes that Chinese wish to tie down Indian troops away from the Pakistan border. Chinese would however have little difficulty in invading this backward Buddhist Kingdom where schoolchildren (at the Scottish Mission) are taught air raid drill and where adults appear disaffected with their ruler and resentful of their Indian protectors. 2. Report on the background to the British government's decision to suspend the constitution of Aden and rule the colony via the High Commissioner. Stepping up of murder campaign by NLF terrorists who want the British to depart before 1968 led to the British decision. 12,000 troops engaged in maintaining security (snap road-blocks, car searches, detention of terrorists) are being reinforced and fears exist that terrorists may next attack their families.
