ROVING REPORT NO 50
This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: ITN 134).
Synopsis
Report in two sections.
1. Report on British Guiana which is negotiating for independence by February 1966, assesses the possibility of renewed violence after that date. Prime Minister Forbes Burnham (interview) describes how his government "has relieved the tension" between the black and Indian communities, set up relief and rehabilitation committees and planned an absolutely impartial development programme. "Racial pattern of voting can and will be broken", adds the leader of the PNC (supported by the black population). His optimism is balanced by a survey of the economic underdevelopment of this potentially wealthy land and by film of a new security force, multiracial in composition, receiving training from the British Army. Political discussion and demonstrations appear to have replaced the racial violence and ideological extremism which marked Dr Jagan's period of rule and report substantiates Commonwealth Secretary Greenwood's "cautious optimism". New spirit is expressed in a cheerful calypso song "this is a country that will go far". 2. Disposal of derelict cars in various countries, including Britain.
