ROVING REPORT NO 52

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: ITN 136).

Synopsis

Report in two sections.

1. Life in Rhodesia appears to have been outwardly little affected by Smith's unilateral declaration of independence. During the week following UDI the Africans remained calm, while Rhodesians relaxed at the weekend as usual, the shops were full and the only unusual sign was the group of people waiting to sign the visitors book at Government House. Remembrance Sunday was celebrated by Rhodesian forces who have been asked to transfer their allegiance from the Queen to Ian Smith. Report includes Smith's Independence speech (extract) which concludes with "God Save the Queen" as well as a Rhodesian TV announcement stating that "everyone in the services is the servant of Rhodesia and the Government". Quiet confidence in Rhodesia contrasts with anti-British rioting in Tanzania. 2. "Things have gone better than expected" for some white farmers who remained in Kenya after independence although African land resettlement and illegal squatting condoned by Kenyatta's government make their future uncertain. Traditional agricultural show at Kitale is opened by Minister Bruce Mackenzie. Large farms have been divided up into small plots for political rather than economic reasons.
