ROVING REPORT NO 2

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: ITN 141).

Synopsis

Report in three sections.

1. Report on the Commonwealth Prime Ministers' conference which discussed the Rhodesia crisis. Belief of the majority of delegates that the UDI problem "can only be solved by force" is expressed by Sir Albert Margai and Dr. Milton Obote. More moderate and less categorical views are held by Kenya's delegate and Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore, while Wilson, who is uncommunicative to reporters at the airport, reportedly remains convinced that economic sanctions will break the Smith regime. Conference permitted an exchange of views, but was inconclusive. Report notes the destruction (burnt houses) which resulted from recent political violence in Nigeria. 2. Frank Wall receives a cheque for 275,000 pounds (?) and describes his new ambitions. 3. Two English women who have gone to Venice to care for the city's stray cats are much resented by the Venetians. Local animal protection society says no cat problem exists, and attacks outside interference, in particular Miss Maple Hawkins' policy of eliminating sick creatures and sterilising others. Miss Hawkins, apparently more sensitive to cats' feelings than to Italian indignation, says her work has been "marvellously satisfactory"; an Italian lawyer describes it as useless.
