ROVING REPORT NO 4

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: ITN 143).

Synopsis

Report in two sections.

1. Inauguration of the Volta Dam by Nkrumah. President warns against the "encroachments of neo-colonialism" and indeed his recent remarks on this subject account for the absence of Mrs. Kennedy, who was to have unveiled a plaque now uncovered by Mrs. Nkrumah. Inaugural ceremony closes with a firework display. Report includes interviews with James Moxon, formerly in the Colonial Service and now a Ghanaian chief, who describes the origins of the Volta Dam project, and a Ghanaian who had the difficult task of resettling 65000 villagers, many of them reluctant for religious reasons to quit their homes. 2. Severe drought now affecting Rhodesia will add to the country's economic difficulties, and may give rise to political disorder among the African population if the food and work situation deteriorates. Interviews with two cattle farmers who are able to send their cattle north by rail reveal that white community is rich and powerful enough to "take these droughts in our stride". Africans are more severely hit although Smith government is at present employing laid-off workers on the construction of dams.
