ROVING REPORT NO 15

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: ITN 152).

Synopsis

Report in three sections.

1. Shop assistant in New York store selling various bugging devices describes and demonstrates some of his gadgets which monitor telephone calls undetected and pick up conversations through walls. Reporter is impressed by their efficiency but dismayed by "this nasty business which could develop into big business." 2. Report asks what effect a UN-sanctioned blockade of Rhodesia, as proposed by Wilson, would have on the country. Majority of white Rhodesians seem confident that Portugal and South Africa will support and supply their country, and a jaunty hit song of the moment "Thank you South Africa" reflects their mood. Future of South African policy is suggested by United Party member Bernard Johnson, who "hopes and believes Verwoerd will come out openly on the side of Rhodesia, which can and must remain independent." 3. Coverage of the traditional Barotse ceremony when the tribal ruler leads his people across the flooded Zambezi plain from the dry-weather to the wet-season capital. The ruler changes en-route from morning dress into a 1908-style British Admiral's uniform.
