ROVING REPORT NO 26

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: ITN 159).

Synopsis

Report in two sections.

1. Recent judgement of the International Court at The Hague that Ethiopia and Liberia had no right to bring a case against South Africa's control of South West Africa will in effect enable Dr Verwoerd to press ahead with establishing ten Bantustans in this area. Present system of apartheid which ensures that 75,000 whites employ 500,000 blacks has evolved from the colonial society fashioned by the Germans before the First World War. Germans in Windhoek and other whites have since prospered, maintaining their identities as Africans lose theirs. Possibility of a nationalist uprising appears remote and doomed to failure considering the strength of South Africa's Army and Air Force, partly equipped with British and French arms. 2. Report on nationalism in Wales, following the election of the Plaid Cymru leader Gwynfor Evans to Parliament and gelignite attacks on dams supplying water to England. Violent wing of the nationalist movement (interview with uniformed member of Free Wales Army) is not taken seriously. Evans (interview) thinks Home Rule "more than likely" in ten years.
