ROVING REPORT NO 34

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: ITN 161).

Synopsis

Report in two sections.

1. Assessment of the politics and personality of Vorster and their probable effect on the future of South Africa. A former pro-Nazi and lawyer who as Minister of Justice was responsible for the widely interpreted law which permits the detention without trial of subversives and communists, the new Prime Minister is expected to strengthen the apartheid system and continue to ignore the protests of the outside world (which he has only once visited). His brother describes him as a strong and religious man whose character was formed by the harsh battle against nature yet also a man not above weeping at home or appreciating an apartheid joke. His political opponent Helen Suzman calls him a capable, determined and humourless man, a nationalist dedicated to preserving complete white supremacy. Only areas of doubt concern his support of Rhodesia and his commitment to the Bantustan idea, which nationalist critics deem extravagant, notwithstanding South Africa's present economic (and military) strength. 2. Visit to the island of Gorgona, off the Colombian coast, where 900 murderers lead a monotonous and depressing existence.
