ROVING REPORT NO 35

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: ITN 162).

Synopsis

Report in two sections.

1. The effect of sanctions on Rhodesian politics. Sanctions against Rhodesia have had unexpected economic and psychological effects, according to a Salisbury stockbroker who says that blockade has not and cannot break the economy so long as South Africa supports her neighbour, and that British attempts to destroy Smith have created a "Dunkirk spirit" increasing support for his dogged stand against outside interference. Paradoxical consequence of this British fighting spirit (which is matched by the firm attachment among white Rhodesians to British tradition, including the celebration of Battle of Britain Sunday - Clifford Dupont lays a wreath) may be the declaration in the near future (11 November ?) by the rebel government of a Republic. British government, which is still represented Sir Humphrey Gibbs, is criticised for having misjudged the mood of white Rhodesia. 2. Report on British and American reactions to the new National Professional Soccer League in the USA. Trainers and managers speak.
