ROVING REPORT NO 39

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: ITN 164).

Synopsis

Report in two sections.

1. Story of the attempt by two Britons to row across the Atlantic which ended when their specially built and well-equipped 15 and a half ft. boat capsized. Probability is that Puffin was overwhelmed by Hurricane Faith which swept the area one day after John Hoare and David Johnstone made their final log entry on 3 September. Empty boat has just been picked up by the Canadian escort destroyer Chaudiere. Readings from the log and a flashback to an interview with the sailors before they left Norfolk, Virginia on 26 May conclude the report. 2. Decision by Spain to close the border traffic crossing at La Linea further reduces the usefulness of Gibraltar to Britain. Naval and air bases which were of strategic importance in the pre-nuclear age are now being run down and Spanish harassment of tourists and workers entering the colony will further weaken the economy which the British taxpayer must support. Reporter insinuates that loud protestations by Gibraltarians of their love of Britain and fear of Spain are motivated by economic self-interest, but concedes that Britain could not abandon Gibraltar to totalitarian Spain and must therefore wait for a more liberal regime to replace Franco's rule.
